TheHazard of Soil Pollution

Friday, February 17th, 2012

While we frequently hear about air pollution, we do not get a lot of information concerning soil pollution. While many individuals are not informed about soil pollution, it is something that we ought to be worried about. It’s not as noticeable as air pollution since it occurs under ground. Soil could be examined for toxins and to what extent are the pollutants present.

Contaminated water can easily seep into the soil making the soil contaminated. When this occurs the soil becomes less productive because the plants, flowers or trees will not grow as well. A lot of the food we eat nowadays has been affected by soil pollution, and is not as healthy as it used to be. With the shortage of healthy plants to remove the carbon monoxide from the air, the quality of our air will continue to worsen. Much of the soil pollution are due to neglectfulness and errors we humans have committed. What has happened is leaky storage tanks full of various chemicals are buried in the ground thus leaking deadly chemicals into the soil. This has prompted plants to simply cease growing and making the area uninhabitable.

Landfills is yet another example of just how pollutants enter the soil. For many years, trash would be dumped with wild abandon and no concern for the possible health effects. The water would pick up the harsh chemicals from the surface and soak into the earth. The chemicals then fall into underground water tables or rivers and start spreading across a region. Luckily nowadays, many landfills are taking steps to restrict dangerous chemicals from going underground.

Another issue is the use of pesticides on plants and gardens. There are various organizations that are trying to get the government to take steps to preserve the soil. But recently, a lot of farmers are going organic and government has imposed stringent guidelines for specific pesticides. Manufacturers have had to make changes, such as using more things that are eco-friendly. Of all countries on the globe, the United States has the biggest trouble with soil pollution. Soil pollution in the United States are a result of no respect for the environment and quick advancement in technology.

With more education, folks are starting to be aware of soil pollution, and several things are being done about it. You can find programs appearing across the United States to address and fix the soil pollution problem. It’s great that everybody is now into organic gardening, and being more conscious about their health.
